sk-teaser-1

In a battle of wills,
of the gods of old.
For each his revenge,
will he forfeit his soul.

On the chessboard of blood,
will their narrative play.
Aged, innocent lives,
revenge claims her way.

Out of hate will come love,
and love will come hate.
For immortal and man,
have entwined their damned fate.

The battle between the Titans and the gods of old did not end with them. The demand for revenge has dripped down into the next generation.

Twins, Marcus and Nicolas, heirs to the throne of the gods and sons of the last remaining Titan, learn that the purpose of their existence is to fulfill a prophecy born of hate and despair. They must battle for Pandora’s daughter’s heart, a girl lost to the human world and unaware of her hidden heritage. For four hundred years Marcus and Nicolas have only been allowed to touch the edge of their soul mate’s dreams, but the time of the prophecy has come.

For Samantha, life has been nothing more than a series of misfortunes and heartbreaks. For years, she has kept her heart locked away, but change is rolling in like a tidal wave. She is now forced to discern the thin line between love and lie, myth and reality, and it would seem that time is running out …

Big News: Soul Keeper Series has a Publisher

Morning everybody!!

Hope you day is going smashingly well. I got eleven, (yes count them) eleven hours of sleep last night. I’m wide awake and rejoining the land of the living after five weeks of the flu. Who knew there were two billion different strands and that I would be the only human alive to sample each of them effectively – I know… impressive.

I’m super stoked to share some news related to my Soul Keeper Series. Last week Seattle-based publisher, Booktrope picked the series up and will be reprinting the titles under their publication starting in January. As you guys know, Deceived released on Aug 28th this year, Destroyed on Nov 15th this year and Descent is scheduled for Jan 2015.

Booktrope is honestly a new style of publishing from anything I’ve seen and to be completely honest, I start researching them a month before I released Soul Keeper independently. I wanted to find a publisher that would help me with the areas I didn’t understand in this industry, meet me at the table with my ideas and theirs alike and give me a wide reach because of their reputation while I’m working so hard to build mine. Enter Booktrope.

Check them out when you get a chance – http://booktrope.com/

Their model is all around working together as a team. So as an author, I’m given a Book Manager, an Editor, a Proofreader (obviously I need this one bad. Is proofreader one or two words?), and a cover designer. There is no up front fees paid to anyone like I do now in self publishing, but everyone shares in the royalty of the book sales. So the incentive is that everyone on a team will work hard together to create something incredible and then promote it in the right venues, aligning the message to the appropriate target market and such.

I have to give thanks out to my friends, Della Connor, who I met at the Texas Teen Book Festival in Austin. The only way to submit to Booktrope is through a recommendation by a current author of theirs and Della was kind enough to submit for me. 🙂

So what does all of this mean? UM… I don’t know, but I’m super stoked to already feel like part of a family.

Look for more announcements to come as I have a lot to share over the next few days. I’ve been BUSY in my flu season.

If you’d like to get these announcements earlier (hot off the press), then sign up for my newsletter!! The holiday one went out yesterday!

Destroyed, Soul Keeper II RELEASED!

Oh my goodness I’m stoked to share this next book with my readers. I had SO MUCH fun writing book two because the plot went to places I couldn’t imagine. There were moments that were wrapped in Greek Myth and others where I felt like I was visiting Diagonally in Harry Potter. So much fun. I think my new favorite character has to be Eros, the God of Love.

Check out the new book on Amazon and pick up a copy today!!

From the second book in the Soul Keeper Series…

Now I lay me down to sleep,

Whom shall I trust my soul to keep?

If I should die before I wake,

I leave to fate my soul to take.

The seal has been broken and the Soul Keeper Prophecy set in motion. Marcus and Nicolas are battling for the heart of one woman, Pandora’s only daughter; however, not everyone is playing by the rules. With interference from both sides of the lines and too many deities with hidden agendas, the trio must take matters into their own hands and look for another ending, one that removes control from fate.

Can they find the missing page from the prophecy that has the ability to change everything?

Will the new stranger they’ve been given as a guide assist or mislead them?

Will Samantha make a decision on who it is that she truly loves, saving one and destroying the other?

What if her choice is no choice at all?

Texas Teen Book Festival

Me TTBF14

Let me first just say, WOW… what a great adventure that was. The people running the festival were so kind and accommodating, the attendees were excited and on fire for reading YA and my BFF was full of jokes and good times.

I had a blast!

We arrived at the festival on Friday (the day before the actual festivities) and put together our table, which was in the exhibition room because I missed being in the author room by a few months. We used a black table cloth, several books, a HUGE bowl of candy, post cards and book marks. We sprinkled some silver confetti stars on the table and propped up a picture of the new book cover in a black frame, and put up a small matted poster of my first book on a large stand beside us. It looked simply, inviting and fantastical!

We wrapped up all of our planning and such and headed out for a girl’s afternoon of shopping and eating – BLISS.

The next morning (Sat) we were onsite by 8 and people we’re showing up by 9, excited and ready to fill their minds with fiction and empty their pockets of hard earned cash! I’m glad I left my wallet at home – I’d have spent ever dime I HAD!

We got the chance to speak to a ton of teenage girls and boys and their moms, teachers, grandmothers and librarians. I met a few new book bloggers, which I was excited to get to know a little better, as well as a few great authors. I made a new friend, D.E.L Connor and had a few good laughs with her and her friends.

We were only allowed to submit 25 books to the bookstore, but I’m happy to say that we sold out of all of them! I signed T-shirts, hands, bookmarks, books – you name it and I signed it… almost. 🙂

I had a blast and met some SUPER cool girls. Can’t wait to go back next year and just so you know, my Amazon sales are up and I’m looking forward to getting the next book moving again. It was just the encouragement that I needed!

Enjoy the pics!

Deceived – Reviewed

Review: Deceived by LA Starkey

The last YA book I read was the last of the Twilight books. Although I found them entertaining enough (anti-feminist message and unnecessary length aside), they didn’t inspire me to pick up another YA book in a hurry.

Then I stumbled across this debut book my Laurie Starkey via my book club and thought why the devil not. I have to admit that checking out the author on Twitter did help my interest as a) she is completely normal, and b) it didn’t strike me as a pile of soppy tripe which would have our young heroine pining over some guy as if nothing else in the world matters.

I was not disappointed! The book focuses on Samantha (no, wait Sam!), her relationship with her best bud Julie, and her emerging love life. No you didn’t need the tissues. What Starkey creates here is a genuine picture of being a teenage girl – Sam is feisty, funny and has hormones! She’s battling with a fear of getting close to people following her formative years in care, not wanting to be seen as some guy’s plaything and the day to day battle of being accepted in High School. The writing is sharp, witty and evocative of all the quick fire banter with friends and the emotions I had in my teenage years. She captures the unique friendship which girls have with each remarkably well. All this is set against a backdrop of Greek mythology (clearly well researched) which Sam has destined to be the soul mate of two immortal brothers who compete for her affections. At time the book is quite dark and it touches on some gritty topics – bereavement, abandonment, jealousy – but they’re pulled together in a style which is light and easy to read.

Now I know that YA may not be for everyone but if you are looking for a well written work with a strong female protagonist, you couldn’t go far wrong with this one. I’ll certainly be picking up the sequel when it comes out.

First Book Signing!!

Book Signing

So Friday I had a great opportunity to join my hubby at his Intermediate school for a book signing event with the teachers over their lunch break. I picked up a box of 25 books to take with me in case anyone wanted to purchase a copy. The best way to make back any money that I’ve invested has to come from getting the books myself and selling them at a live event. My mathematics worked out perfectly. I sold all 25 and had enough residual income to fund the homecoming weekend at my house!

So I thought it would be a little odd talking with people about the book or just trying to interact with a bunch of people that I didn’t know, but you know what I found out? It wasn’t odd at all. I love my love and my characters and had a great time telling people that approached me about them. I joked with everyone that came up and just allowed myself to be excited about sharing with each of them something that I created. It was a great hour and a half and I’m now looking uber forward to going to Austin next month for the Teen Festival.

My cover reveal is on Wednesday this next week, which I’ll post up here. If any of you are interested in hosting it with me, please e-mail me at laurie.Starkey@att.net and I’ll shoot you a copy of the cover for Wednesday’s reveal!!

So in the end the book signing thing was a total win and I got 25 more copies of my book in the hands of teachers that interact with the kiddos that I’d love to reach. Great event, great interaction and I’m actually way more comfortable talking with any and everyone than I thought I would be. 🙂

Finished up, wrapped tightly and DONE!

There is something so right about typing that final word on a book you’ve been working on. You put in the last period and sit back in your chair, your head aching a little and your body worn out and yet… it’s exhilarating. Done!

Isn’t it so funny how quickly you start to edit in your mind, even though you’ve promised yourself that you’ll take a few days off from working on any part of this blasted project and just enjoy life. And yet… the voices start nagging at me to change this and adjust that and oh this must be cleaned up.

HUSH. Just slow your roll and let me enjoy the feeling of accomplishing something pretty awesome. (Yes, I am talking to myself. It’s cleansing for one’s mental health, or so I tell myself.)

I’m done. I’m finished. It’s wrapped up and ready for editing, but the creative process that requires all of my senses to truly hum is complete for this project.

Destroyed, Soul Keeper II is around 90K words and after 16 days, a respiratory infection, trip to Lubbock, 30 cups of cold coffee and 25,000 jumping jacks to wake up – it’s done.

I hope you’re pushing through to finish something on your goals list. We’re growing or dying, right?

Perseverance is my nemesis and yet when I embrace the sheer power of what she offers, there is nothing that I cannot do.

Push, shove, shuffle forward toward your goals today.

Finish it up, wrap it up and then… be DONE, for tomorrow, we start all over again. :–)
